The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for a Recreation/Aquatics Specialist in the Parks and Recreation Department. The Recreation Aquatics Specialist works with assisting with the planning, organizing and coordinating of programs and staff, supervising swimming pool operations, providing oversight and training of staff at the direction of the Recreation Program Supervisor, and related work as required. This position exercises general supervision over assigned staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following major duties performed. Duties are listed from most to least important.
- At the direction of the Recreation Program Supervisors, coordinates and executes various recreation programs as assigned, including recruiting, scheduling, reporting, documentation; assisting with training and supervising staff.
- Assists the Recreation Program Supervisor with overall operations and management of the City’s Aquatics operations; including:
- Plans and leads Lifeguard and Swim Instructor classes; teaches basic water rescue and personal water safety.
- Plans and leads lifeguard in-service orientation and trainings; facilitates Junior Lifeguard Program.
- Supervises daily operation of pool facility and orders supplies and concessions
- Handles pool cash summary and deposits.
- Coordinates aquatic special events.
- Assists the Recreation Coordinator with special events as assigned.
- Assists with other department events, as assigned; including planning, organizing, supervising and implements activities and setup and tear down of events.
- Completes employee onboarding for Recreation Supervisors.
- Creates and designs marketing materials for programs, continuing education and research for new programs.
- Evaluates programs, participants and staff.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate files, records and reports.
- Performs other duties as requested.
- Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED; Associates degree preferred
- Two years’ experience lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons
- Red Cross Lifeguard certification
- Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification (must obtain within 6 months)
- Valid driver's license
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
The Recreation Aquatics Specialist requires thorough knowledge of aquatics programming and the physical operation of plant equipment of swimming pool; thorough knowledge of the philosophies, principles and practices of professional recreation work; thorough knowledge of first aid and lifesaving methods and safety precautions used in aquatic recreational work; general knowledge of the principles, techniques, operating procedures, materials and equipment required for various special events and recreation programs; ability to efficiently schedule and coordinate use of pool facilities; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to prepare reports; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS
The Recreation Aquatics Specialist requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
