Solid Waste Equipment Operator
Sanitation Division of Public Works
The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for a Solid Waste Equipment Operator in the Sanitation division of the Public Works Department. This skilled trades position performs intermediate work operating heavy equipment in the handling and transportation of refuse to disposal site and operating a transfer station, and related work as required.
HOURS: Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm. Flexible schedule, home evenings and weekends!
One 4-hour morning shift rotation every 6 weeks, generally overtime.
SALARY RANGE: $27.21 to $38.32/hour
RAISES: Employees receive a raise on their anniversary date each year.
Plus this position also receives a 6% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase in January 2027 per the Union contract.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following major duties performed. Duties are listed from most to least important.
• Operates a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment including pay loader, waste handler, roll-off trucks, commercial garbage trucks, yard waste collection trucks and recycling trucks.
• Fills roll-off boxes; operates compactor; handles dumping activities.
• Maintains and cleans transfer station, heavy equipment, semi-trucks, trailers and facility.
• Assists in various duties at transfer station including: operating compactor, snow removal, answering phones, assisting customers, loading trucks and dispatch activities.
• Responds to public inquiries; provides assistance on policies, activities and procedures.
• May perform limited duties as a team leader.
* Drives semi-trucks to landfill/destination sites and unloads refuse.
• Performs other duties as requested.
• Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required.
REQUIREMENTS
• High school diploma or GED
• Six months experience operating heavy equipment, or related experience
• Valid commercial driver's license Class B and air brake endorsement. Valid commercial driver's license with Class "A" with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the operation and servicing of light, medium and heavy equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; thorough knowledge of transfer station operations; general knowledge of standard office practices and the operation of office equipment and applicable software packages; skill in operating automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of equipment; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires lifting, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
