Description

The City of Moorhead is accepting applications to create an eligibility list for future firefighter job openings in the Fire Department. This protective service position performs basic work responding to emergency fire and medical related situations and hazardous material incidents, providing entry, suppression and rescue services, maintaining equipment and facilities, and related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responds to emergencies including fire suppression, emergency medical services, HAZMAT incidents, auto extrication, odor investigation, technical rescue, etc.
  • Maintains fire apparatus and equipment; cleans fire station and maintains grounds.
  • Assists in performing fire inspections for multi-unit rental housing and performs code enforcement activities.
  • Coordinates prevention activities; conducts station tours for the public; presents community demonstrations and events.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To perform the Firefighter position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • IFSAC or Proboard Firefighter II Certification
  • Valid Driver's License required

Training, Certificates, and Licenses

  • Prefer Associates/Technical degree in fire technology, or related field
  • Licensed Firefighter, State of Minnesota within one year of hire
  • National Registry of EMT Certification within one year of hire
  • State of Minnesota EMT Certification within one year of hire
  • NFPA 472 Compliant HAZMAT Technician Training within one year of hire
  • NIMS 700, 800, 100, 200 within one year of hire
  • Fire Equipment Operator within one year of hire
  • MN Fire Instructor 1 Certification within three years of hire

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
General knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures, equipment and methods; general knowledge of the street system, major buildings and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of fire prevention and pre-planning strategies and techniques; general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; general knowledge of technical firefighting principles and techniques, principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS
The Firefigher work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
